Letter with a Poem Attached/Email with a Poem Attached

1 Dec

Lately it’s been impossible for me to not think about travelling, even though I’m not going anywhere for a few weeks. Getting a letter seems like the next best thing to leaving town, but Harold Bowes’ poem/letter Letter With A Poem Attached/Email with a Poem Attached is the best thing.

Maybe it’s an air pocket, I don’t know
When you pull the sheet up over your body
The moment before it alights
On each toe
During the earthquake a few tiles fell

Read the rest at Elimae.

Thank you so much for your kinds words! Do you continue to revise your poems after publication? I’ve since revised the opening, included a bit about hummingbird wings, as follows:

Thank you for your recent letter. That was a beautiful passage describing the clouds against the wedge wood sky. We’ve returned from our vacation in the nation’s capital. We spent most of our time in the museums on the mall. I liked the art museums best. The day after we visited the national cathedral, we were in an office building when the earthquake struck. Everything blurred, like hummingbird wings in flight — the walls, the furniture, the buildings outside the windows, the trees on the far hillside, everything, blurring. All of us, and all things, were for those moments within the beat of a hummingbird’s wing. It feels like such a long time since the last time I saw you.
