SSM: “The Notes” by Kyle Winkler

9 May

My wife and I have a journal. It started last year, a gift from me for Valentine’s Day, I think, or her birthday. It started as one of those cute things where I write a note in it and hide it, then she writes one and hides it, and so on. The sentiment didn’t last. A while ago I asked, “Whatever happened to that journal?” And she said, “What journal?” And I said, “The one we’d write to each other in and hide and stuff.” And she said, “Oh, I don’t know.” A couple weeks later we found it tucked away in our bookshelf.

We are filled with words. Mostly, we use our words to talk about our days. We use words for the inconsequential stuff, ironic I suppose given my love for words, but in speaking between us, it’s what works best to get the inconsequentials out of the way so we can get to the consequences.

The couple, a man and a woman, had an argument.

“This happens because I can’t understand what you say,” the man said.
“I can’t understand what you say,” she said.
“What do you propose we do?”
“I understand you better when you write it out. Let’s do that.”

They bought a supply of notebooks and wrote out their feelings and emotions and thoughts with pen and pencil. The plan worked. It worked remarkably well. It worked so well, in fact, friends doubted their relationship would last.

“No talking,” the friends said. “How absurd! You have to talk. Talking is human. It’s basic. It’s natural. They’ll break. They’ll crumble.”

Read the whole story at matchbook.

NB: Kyle Winkler is reading at Vouched Presents on May 15th. Come out. Have a beer (or 4). Have a good time. Talk to Kyle. He is nice. He will appreciate your talking to him. He will appreciate you.

Yeah, man. He has a few other stories around the web that I think you’d really dig. It was hard for me to choose which to vouch for SSM. There are a couple at The Collagist recently that you’re probably aware of. Also, a really great one at Conjunctions.

The 15th is going to be gnarly bones, man.
