April First Friday Tonight!

1 Apr

I freaking love the Internet on April Fools. Hulu has gone all 90s. Google is pissing off typographers everywhere. And Slashdot is letting you copyedit them. So much awesome.

And also awesome is the table I’ll have set up tonight at Big Car for First Friday, where I’ll be welcoming Cut Through the Bone by Ethel Rohan and What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us by Laura van den Burg to the table, two really incredible collections of short stories. I was hoping to have copies of The Chronology of Water, a really incredible memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch that is actually just releasing today, but there was a media mail snafu and it hasn’t quite arrived at my doorstep.

You might notice these are all new titles by women, and you’d be right. After the January Vouched Presents, which was really freaking incredible, but at which I realized the lineup (Matt Bell, Aaron Burch, Sean Lovelace, and Andy Devine) was a big sausage fest and that only 3 out of the 21 titles I had on my table were by women, I decided I need to diversify my table just a bit more on the gender-scale.  So, I went in search of wonderful women words. And damn if I didn’t find them. They are out there like the Truth, and I’m really stoked to bring them to the table.

So anyway, come out to Big Car tonight, because they’re having a huge celebration to announce their first release on their new record label, and there’s going to be chairs and bands and beers and books and laughter. So much laughter. See. I’ll prove it with a flyer:

The dots coming out of that dude’s mouth? That’s laughter. Come out and celebrate!

The van den Berg is an excellent choice–what a strong short story collection. And just bought Cut Through the Bone last week. Really enjoyed what I’ve read so far. Nice picks!

Thanks, different Laura. Let me know what you think about Cut Through the Bone. It’s such sharp writing.
