Holy crap. If anyone out there says the first ever Vouched Presents reading last Saturday was anything other than a success, I will smack them in their damn mouth.

About 50 people gathered in Big Car Gallery to see the Artifice Mag crew bring their sentences to life. I probably should have done a real head count. Note to self: head counts for future readings.

Really, it wasn’t even the number of people there that made the night a success (though that helps), but the quality of people – audience and readers alike. The Vouched table was swarmed both pre- and post-reading with people and excitement and energy. During the reading, Roxane Gay, David Blomenburg, M. Kitchell, and Elizabeth Hildreth took the audience from enraptured to laughter and back again. The editors of Artifice, Tadd, Rebekah, and Ian were gracious and engaging MCs and city-guests. Here they are:

Afterwards, a posse of us stepped over to the Brass Ring to celebrate ourselves. We were joined by a contingent from the Indiana Authors Awards banquet, including Micah Ling and David McNamara who were in town for the banquet, as Micah was up for the Emerging Author’s award for her book Three Islands out on sunnyoutside press.

There was laughter. There was aplomb. There was talk of network and community and word-hunger. There was libation.

Thanks to Big Car and Artifice for helping me make this happen. Thanks to the readers for being as beautiful and engaging in person as you are on the page. Thanks to those in attendance for filling me with swell and future.

And by the way, thanks to Tadd’s sister Ashley for taking some incredible photos of the evening (including the 2 I’ve used in this post). She has more pictures from the evening at her flickr, and even if you don’t care about the reading, her work is really incredible, and you should check it out.

Yes, it was a sweet sweet night. I wish I could have stuck around for more hangage! Next time! Let me know how I can help with physical Vouched things. Good job.
